Five reasons why imported roses are not the best choice for Valentine's Day or Your Wedding

I don't know about you, but I often find myself wondering just what is it about roses that people seem to associate exclusively with romance. Who gave them this title? And why- especially when there are so many other varieties out there that are just as, if not more, beautiful and special.

For us, we are all about working with locally-grown seasonal flowers. We take great pride in sourcing our flowers from small specialty farms in our region, many of which have been family owned for generations. These farmers specialize in small batch premium florals, many of which are often not found at big box retailers or traditional wholesalers.

In addition to our desire to offer a variety of special florals and supporting local farmers, here are five key reasons why imported roses are not the best choice:

1. High Carbon Footprint
Imported roses often travel thousands of miles from countries like Ecuador, Kenya, or Colombia, resulting in a significant carbon footprint due to long-distance air transport. This environmental impact is much higher than locally-grown flowers, which don’t require such extensive shipping.

2. Shorter Vase Life
Roses that are imported have usually been harvested several days, if not weeks, before they reach your local florist. The extended travel time can cause them to lose freshness, leading to a shorter vase life compared to locally-grown roses, which are cut and delivered much quicker.

3. Use of Pesticides and Chemicals
Many large-scale rose farms overseas rely on heavy pesticide use to ensure their crops survive the transportation process. These chemicals can linger on the flowers, impacting both the environment and your health. Local farms often use more sustainable, eco-friendly farming practices with fewer pesticides.

4. Support for Local Economies
By choosing imported roses, you’re indirectly supporting large-scale, often industrialized farming operations in foreign countries. In contrast, buying locally-grown flowers supports small-scale farmers in your community, helping to strengthen the local economy and create jobs.

5. Lack of Variety and Seasonality
Imported roses dominate the flower market year-round, but they often lack the diversity and seasonal appeal of locally-grown blooms. Local flowers, such as tulips, peonies, dahlias, zinnias, or sweet peas, offer a wider variety of colors, textures, and fragrances, allowing you to choose something more unique and aligned with the season.

So whether you are planning a wedding or a special event, or placing an order for Valentine's Day or Mother's Day, we would love to design something special that looks beyond imported roses to spotlight the gorgeous flowers that are grown locally right here in our hometowns.
